Communicable Diseases

A communicable disease is “any disease that can be passed from one person or animal to another, either directly through body fluids or discharge, or indirectly through surfaces, substances or vectors like flies or mosquitoes.”

The Health Unit tracks these diseases and, upon a report, conducts a disease investigation to determine the source and potential risks to our community. Continuous surveillance and quick response help protect public health in Webster County. We offer prevention advice and provide treatment for some diseases.

Disease Investigation

Functions

The Health Unit works within the community along with state partners to detect, control, and prevent the spread of communicable (infectious) diseases. We monitor communicable disease reports, investigate illnesses, and utilize consistent reporting from local partners to monitor and ensure the health of our community.

Surveillance Sites

Epidemiologists collect disease data from a number of community partners including:

  • Colleges and universities
  • Daycares
  • Hospitals
  • Employers
  • Physician clinics
  • Public schools

Reportable Disease Conditions

In Missouri, a reportable disease is one that health providers and laboratories are required by law to report to the local public health agency. Reportable diseases are of public interest and safety because of their contagiousness, severity, or frequency. You can learn more about specific reportable diseases from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
